Finally made it out to check Josie's ear. The ride out was lonesome as I left the pups at home. Way too cold for them.
As you may or may not be able to see it is healing. It is very gross. She wouldn't let me cut off that chunk you can see. It is probably better to let it come off naturally but I know she will end up ripping it off if she scratches her itch.
Something I found via google when searching horse ear injuries: "The horse's ears are rarely injured because the horse usually tries to keep them out of harm's way. But occasionally an ear will be bitten by another horse, or caught in a fence and torn." I seem to get the rare with my horses. Senda with Fungal Gutteral Pouch infection which had eaten through the artery and PJ with the unknown right front foot syndrome. Again, I will take this one any day over most injuries.
I lunged her but was a bit limited as trot poles were set up. She was a bit frisky, really jumping into the canter before I could finish saying "AND (And Canter is my usual command to request a canter depart), any encouragement sent her into a head shaking buck off. At least I know she will be decent tomorrow night having gotten that out of her system. Since her injury we have been taking it easy but now we go back to work.
My order arrived today. The Mountain Horse pants fit well. I was worried about the length but they have snap adjustments. I took off what I will call the boot strap. The portion that fits under your boot. I will keep them just in case but I feel they are unnecessary. I can tell they will be warm but the test will be Friday whether they are warm enough.
Life is great today.
